Blackthorn
(Prunus spinosa)
Blackthorn has a mid green leaf and white flowers in spring which develop into black fruit (sloes) in winter.
The Blackthorn has sharp thorns and is therefore good to include in a hedge if a degree of security is required.
Blackthorn is also a good choice to include in a mixed native hedge as it is appealing to wildlife. An unfussy plant, Blackthorn is tolerant of most soil conditions and should be planted at a rate of five plants per metre.
