Dogwood
(Cornus sanguinea)
Noted for its red stems in winter the Dogwood is a deciduous plant with a mid green ribbed leaf. The Dogwood produces clusters of white flowers in spring turning to small black berries in winter.
Dogwood also gives a good autumn colour when its leaves turn yellow.
The plant is easy to grow and enjoys wet conditions. To maintain the bright red stems Dogwood should be cut hard back in the spring.
Dogwood can be grown either as part of an informal hedge or on its own as a specimen plant and looks particularly good in a waterside setting or as part of a winter garden.
