Hazel
(Corylus avellana)

Hazel is a deciduous plant bearing pendulous pale yellow catkins in the spring before the new leaves emerge.

The fresh new leaves of the Hazel are lime green, turning to mid green in the summer and yellow in the autumn. The Hazel produces a nut also known as a cobnut.

The stems of the Hazel can be coppiced and have been used traditionally for hurdle making amongst other things.

Hazel is tolerant of most soils and can be planted as part of a mixed hedgerow.
