Buy Trees

By Steffen HeinzBuying a tree can be a very hectic time as there is so much to choose from and so many different things to take into consideration. You should first consider what you would like the function of your tree to be, will it be ornamental, or will it serve a specific purpose, such as providing shade, shielding your house against wind, provide your property with more privacy, give you fruit, attract wildlife, improve the quality of air in the area, or absorb excess rainfall?

Once you’ve decided what you would like your tree to do (a very important decision when you buy trees) consider what natural shape of tree, what form would work best for the purpose that you have selected, and what size it will eventually be. Doing this will mean you will have to maintain the tree less later on and save a lot of money and hard work!

Bare in mind that every property has various conditions that will affect the eventual success or failure of the life of your tree.

  • The amount of soil present has a very large impact on the tree, and you should test your soil for fertility, salinity, and pH.
  • Exposure to light is another important factor to consider, will the tree get too much or too little?
  • Drainage is also important, poor drainage can cause serious problems for a tree and will mean that they are unable to draw oxygen from the soil.

Once you’ve established a suitable site, its time to go and buy trees. The first thing to look for is quality, here are some things you can use to determine the quality of the tree.

  • Healthy roots, not circling, small, or very knotted.
  • A trunk free of wounds, not damaged by transport/pruning.
  • Strong and firm, with well spaced branches, not week or few brances growing close to the trunk.

Once you’ve found one that ticks all the boxes, its time to get that tree home! Buy your tree, and get ready to plant it!
