Garden Hedges

By Steffen HeinzFor hundreds of years people have used various garden hedges and rows of garden hedging in order to divide up land, provide their property with some privacy, and for luxurious garden decoration. A hedge is a line of shrubs and bushes placed closesly together to form a barrier, or mark a boundary of an area, hedges arranged in this formation and for this purpose are also often known as 'hedgerows'.

Garden hedges have always traditionally been more decorative for an ornamental layout, used for large victorian style mazes and garden hedge sculptures trimmed to perfection. Typically these are privet, hawthorn, beech (pictured right), yew, leyland, cypress, hemlock, box, holly, and lavender hedges, but the range of hedging plants used is very diverse so these are not the only types that you may come across for garden use.

Generally hedges below the height of one's kness are thought of as borders to areas in the garden, appreciated from an elevated position such as a terrace or veranda. Hedges higher up than this, generally around eye level, are the ones most commonly used in the tradtional garden maze.

Hedges for Topiary (Hedge Sculpting) are generally the box, laural, holly, yew, or privet variety, and are used for crafting some of the most beautiful garden forms known to man like the stunning elephant topiary pictured to the right.

Some of the most noteable topiary displays in England can be found in Cliveden (buckinghamshire), Levens Hall and Topiary Garden (Cumbria), Canons Ashby (northampton), Stiffkey (norfolk), Great Dixter Gardens (east sussex), and Much Wenlock Priory (shropshire). All of these locations have a marvelous variety of topiary and garden hedging that should definitely be witnessed. You will be stunned just by the diversity of what is possible with such a simple plant alone.
