Elaeagnus hedge plants (Elaeagnus ebbingei) are a decorative and robust evergreen shrub, fast growing and tolerant of most soils and conditions including coastal situations. Elaeagnus plants fix nitrogen in the soil which is useful for promoting good growth in other plants. Elaeagnus common name is Oleaster or wild olive, have shiny leaves with a silvery white underside. Elaeagnus have highly scented small tubular flowers which appear in Autumn and incredibly bear orange fruit in the Spring.
Elaeagnus hedging are wildlife friendly, grow in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, tolerant of dry soils and coastal winds but may become chlorotic on shallow chalky soils. Avoid very wet ground sites.
