Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is a bushy low growing plant from the Mediterranean. Lavender have narrow leaves and spires of flower heads in ranges of pink to purple, very attractive to birds and butterflies. Lavender is very fragrant and looks superb as a low border for paths and beds, versatile it will also grow in containers, banked slopes and patios. Flowers in June.
Lavender looks good in the height of summer with its swathes of colour, enhancing a formal or cottage style garden. Lavender flowers last for well over a month, it is possible to get a second slightly weaker flush after pruning in mid summer. Sheer back to one third after flowering annually and thin out stems on mature woody plants.
Lavender is deer, rabbit and drought resistant, so plant out in full sun with very good drainage.
Lavender plants are available in several different sizes and varieties. The seeds of Lavender plants are a favourite of goldfinches.
