Photinia Red Robin (Photinia x fraseri Red Robin) is a most striking hedging plant with bright red young growth which lasts through the summer. The Photinia hedge plant is evergreen with glossy leaves, and frothy white, not very fragrant flowers in Spring.
Photinia Red Robin is also easy to keep as a tidy hedge, trim not later than mid-August, as the young shoots are vulnerable to frost. Trim the top if you want a less formal hedge, or all sides of this evenly growing plant for a more formal shape. Photinia grows in a loose style, and therefore will not provide a secure screen. Singular plants will grow into a pleasant shrub, reaching a height of 6ft.
Photinia Red Robin grows about 30cm a year, keep young plants watered, and once established should be resistant to drought. Best to grow in sun or semi sun in a sheltered position. When mature Photinia flowers become more tinged with pink edges.
Photinia as a hedge should be planted about 75cm apart for a compact hedge. Plant 60cm away from a wall or fence to ensure roots stay moist. Photinia drops leaves throughout the year, and fallen leaves will harbour slugs and snails.
