The Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris) is a deciduous plant with showy pink-tinged white flowers in the spring followed by small blush coloured fruits in the winter. The leaves of the Crab Apple turn yellow in the autumn. Crab Apple plants are unfussy and will grow in most soil conditions.
Crab Apple is also a valuable addition to a native farm hedging mix. Mixed native farm hedges are excellent for attracting birds and other wildlife as hedges harbour insects and contain berries and other sources of food for wildlife. Native mixed hedges also offer winter protection for wildlife.
When planted as a hedge the Crab Apple should be planted at a rate of five plants per metre.
