Guelder Rose (Viburnum opulus) is an attractive British native shrub. It is a hardy plant and can be used as part of a mixed native or ornamental hedge.
Guelder Rose plants will tolerate wet soils, growing best on moist, moderately alkaline soils - it will also grow in part shade. The leaves give a good autumn colour, whilst the flowers are produced in early summer.
The flowers of the Guelder Rose are pinkish white clusters which turn to red berries in the autumn.
The Guelder Rose is an invaluable addition to a hedgerow. Mixed native hedgerows are an excellent source of food for birds and other wildlife as they harbour insects and berries. Native mixed hedges also offer some winter protection for wildlife.
