Mill Farm Plants Hornbeam - Fastigiate Tree

Carpinus betulus Fastigiata is a compact, upright form of common Hornbeam.  The summer leaves are an oval, bright green shape turning golden orange in Autumn.

Hornbeam have very strong wood, and strong wind resistant capabilities.

Feathered whips, have lower growing branches which is useful for an instant tall hedge. Spacing should be on small plants between 80-120cm apart.

Standard Hornbeams have longer trunks, where branches start at about 1.8 to 2m high, which provides an excellent stilted screen above a fence line. Hornbeam in this way should be planted 8-9 ft apart.

Hornbeams do very well in  heavy clay or chalky soils and are suitable for park  and open space settings. Their oval compact shape looks very attractive, perfect for formal, avenue or architectural style planting.
