Field Maple is a deciduous, compact tree growing up to a height of 15-25m and is native to the UK and Europe.
Field Maple can be trained to provide a dense hedge, great for cover for birds, and as a tree can be trained into architectural styles, such as umbrella or pleached tree avenues.
Field maple leaves are palm shaped 5 lobed, with rounded teeth, darkish green but in Autumn becomes a golden yellow.
Field maple flowers are lime green, cup shaped corymbs, hanging in clusters at the same time as new leaves, and after pollination turn into winged fruit.
Field Maples provide nourishment for insects, birds and mammals.
Field maple will grow on any soil, including chalk but not suitable for coastal regions.
Field Maple wood is the hardest, fine grained wood, made into harps and provides a high shine surface for flooring.
All Maples are known for their sap bearing qualities, where maple syrup comes from. Field Maple can grow up to 350 years and is found in woodland, scrubs and hedgerow.
