Golden catalpa, also known as Indian bean tree, or cigar tree is a deciduous tree, with large, bold acid yellow leaves, and white bell shaped leaves in June/July, with bean shaped seeds following after.
The Golden catalpa grows quickly to begin with and eventually up to 20ft/9m in height. Golden catalpa is resistant to burning from the full sun, although the young leaves may turn a little brown on the edges before the roots are fully established. Golden catalpa provide a beautiful dramatic display of leaves, flowers and bean seeds.
Golden catalpa can be coppiced in smaller growing areas. The tree can be cut to the ground every 2-3 years to create new bushy growth. After cutting back, enrich the soil and water in the summer.
The flowers are attractive to bees. The beautiful bright golden leaves go well with other plants that are darker green, a bronze or burgundy colour is also very complimentary.
