The Evergreen Oak tree (Quercus ilex) also known as Holm (holly) oak, is a majestic evergreen tree which can be used as a hedging plant with striking affect. Evergreen Oaks have silver, find down underside and glossy green upper leaves variable in size, which look similar to holly when young.
Evergreen oak display feathery catkins of tiny lime green flowers in spring. Small green acorns form in the spring, turning to reddish brown in Autumn.
Evergreen oak make a very attractive hedge, very compact and an excellent wind break. As young plants Evergreen oak requires some attention and should be shielded from hard frost. Evergreen oak prefer lighter soils. Grow in full sun, any soil but not heavy clay.
Evergreen oak should be pruned once in August. Suitable for formal garden and can be shaped as topiary and in a pleached style. Evergreen oak's wood was once valued for making carts and wooden beams.
