Holly (Ilex aquifolium) is a slow growing, popular instantly recognisable evergreen tree or shrub which can tolerate cold and coastal situations. Holly has dark green glossy tough leaves. The sharp spines on the leaves make Holly hedging plants an excellent choice for added security. Holy is effective windbreak with its dense bushy shape, a good cover for nesting birds and a source of food for birds and mammals. The older Holly leaves and nearer the top of the bush tend to be smoother and less prickly. Deer forage on the top of Holly shrubs. Mature Holly plants are drought resistant.
Holly if left to grow becomes a dense shrub or tree, and can grow up to 15m and live for 300 years.
Holly needs a female bush to produce classic winter red berries, or drupes (fruit seeds covered by a hard case and fleshy surrounds) produced from small white 4 petalled fragrant flowers. The bark is thin and smooth dotted with brown warts. The wood itself is pure white, and made into furniture, particularly walking sticks and good for firewood.
Holly hedging plants are good for medium and taller hedges. Trim in December, when the plant is dormant cutting off longer shoots and cross branches.
The Holly is slow growing, shade tolerant and will grow happily in most soils requiring little maintenance.
