Common Alder - Alnus glutinosa.

A widespread fast growing native tree found along river banks, ponds and lakes and in wet heavy clay soils.

Well known for it tolerance of wet ground

Available in varieties of Glutinosa the common native alder and the Italian Alder - Alnus cordata which has a shiny leaf and has widespread use as a windbreak in a number of situations. Often used in plant nurseries, vineyards and around glasshouses as protection. Alnus cordata holds its leaves well into the winter months which can be an added advantage for screening. It's strong roots can be used to stop riverside erosion.

For identificationThe bark of the Alder tree is dark, almost black and deeply fissured. Alder produces attractive female catkins in late winter and male cones both on the same tree. Pollination is by wind.

Widespread around the British countryside
