The Rowan tree is a diciduous tree with smooth, grey bark, pinnate (feathery) leaves with serrated edges, and creamy-white flowers in late spring that turn into bright red or orange berries in late summer and early autumn. It is also known as the mountain ash due to its similarity to ash leaves and its ability to grow in high, tough environments. Rowan trees are resilient, support diverse wildlife

For identification the Rowan tree has:

Bark: Smooth, with a grey or silvery-grey color.
Leaves: Compound leaves with multiple, serrated leaflets arranged alternately on a central stem. They turn a reddish color in the autumn.
Flowers: Clusters of small, creamy-white flowers in late spring or early summer.
Fruit: Clusters of bright red or orange, berry-like fruits (technically pomes) that ripen in late summer/early autumn.
Habitat and growth
Rowan trees are native to Europe and are known for their resilience, thriving in various conditions including poor soil and high altitudes.
They can grow as small trees or shrubs and can reach heights of up to 15 meters (49 feet) or more in ideal conditions.
Wildlife: The berries are a crucial food source for many bird species, such as Waxwings, Thrushes, and Fieldfares.
Food: Berries can be cooked to make jams, jellies, and wine, but should not be eaten raw as they contain a compound that can cause stomach upset.
Wood: The wood is valued for its strength, and it has been traditionally used for tools, walking sticks, and other implements.
