Whitebeam

The Whitebeam tree (Sorbus aria) is a compact, deciduous tree that typically grows up to 15 metres tall with a smooth, grey trunk. Its most defining feature is its oval, serrated leaves, which are a deep, shiny green on top but possess a distinct, felt-like white underside. When the wind blows, the shimmering foliage gives the canopy a striking, silvery appearance.

In late spring, the tree blooms with dense clusters of scented, five-petalled white flowers. By autumn, these develop into bright scarlet berries, providing an essential food source for local birds and wildlife.

Whitebeam trees prefer moist but well-drained soils that are lime rich or chalky though they are very adaptable.
