The Dog Rose, (Rosa canina) also known as wild briar or wild rose is a deciduous fast growing ,rambling plant, growing about 40-60 cm a year.
The Dog Rose has pretty pink scented open flowers, which fade to white then turn into red hips in the winter. The hips of the Dog Rose are high in vitamin C and have some culinary uses. Birds love them too. The Dog Rose is a valuable addition to a native or ornamental hedge or can be planted as a single specimen hedge. The Dog rose thorns provide a good security or barrier hedge with plenty of seasonal interest.
With its long arching stems the Dog Rose makes an informal hedge with a loose structure. Cut right back after planting, and it should only need a light trim in late winter.
Dog Rose can make a valuable addition to a native farm hedging mix, along with other native species such as Hazel hedge plants and Hawthorn hedging plants. Mixed native farm hedges are excellent for attracting birds and other wildlife as hedges play host to insects, berries and other sources of food for wildlife. Native mixed hedges also offer winter protection for wildlife.
The Dog Rose will grow in most soil conditions and aspects.
