DOGWOOD

Noted for its red stems in winter the Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) is a deciduous plant with a mid green ribbed slightly pointed leaf. The Dogwood produces clusters of white flowers in spring turning to small black berries in winter. Dogwood hedging also gives a good autumn colour when its leaves turn a fiery yellow.

The Dogwood hedge plant is easy to grow and enjoys wet conditions. To maintain the bright red stems Dogwood plants should be cut hard back in the spring. 

Dogwood can be grown either as part of an informal hedge or on its own as a specimen plant and looks particularly good in a waterside setting or as part of a winter garden. Plant 18" to 24"  apart, and in time will produce a good dense hedge with heights between 4 to 7 foot. Dogwood tolerates wet and chalky soils.

Dogwood hedge plants are also a valuable addition to a native farm hedging mix.  Mixed native farm hedges play host to insects, berries and other food sources and so are important to wildlife.  Native mixed hedges also offer winter protection to wildlife.
