Field Maple (Acer campestre) is a small deciduous fast growing tree which can be included as part of a mixed native hedge.
Field maple are a source of food for ladybirds, hoverflies and birds, all enjoying the nectar, pollen and fruits. Filed maple have attractive brown woody stems, their distinctive feature is the bark becomes rough, even the lower branches become ridged and all Maples have sap. The small branches are horizontal and directly opposed.
The leaves of the Field Maple are erect, emerge as a pink colour in the spring turning to green in the summer and yellow in autumn. Field Maple have small green flowers which turn into winged seeds, similar to Sycamore but the seeds are horizontally paired and opposed to each other, unlike sycamore whose winged seeds hang down.
Field Maple is also a valuable addition to a native farm hedging mix. Mixed native farm hedges are excellent for attracting wildlife as hedges play host to insects, berries and other sources of food for wildlife. Native mixed hedges also offer winter protection for wildlife.
Field Maple is a popular choice which will grow in most situations.
