Privet (Ligustrum) is a fairly fast growing semi-evergreen plant, good for formal requirements. Provide good organic matter when planting for healthy vigorous growth. Privet is the best type for dense evergreen foliage.  Privet likes clipping and requires trimming twice a year, once in spring and again at the end of summer. Clip new growth to a third of its length, two to three times a year until desired size is reached. This way Privet produces a dense screen and is easier to maintain.  The best height for this hedge is between 2-3m. Privet produces pungent white flowers  in long panicles in mid-summer.

Privet hedges are useful in an urban setting as it is tolerant of pollution. It can be grown on most soils.

To create a dense Privet hedge it should be planted at a rate of five plants per metre in a double staggered row.
