WAYFARER

The Wayfarer (Viburnum Iantana) is a deciduous shrub with soft mid-green downy leaves. The flat heads of creamy white flowers of the Wayfarer are borne in early summer on its arching stems.

Wayfarer plants thrive on chalky alkaline soils and were traditionally planted along Pilgrimage routes, hence its name.

The Wayfarer bears red berries gradually turning to black which are attractive to birds and other wildlife. They are commonly grown as an ornamental plant for their flowers and berries.  However, the fruit is mildly toxic if eaten in quantity.

The Wayfarer is a valuable addition to a native farm hedging mix.  Mixed farm hedgerows are excellent for attracting birds and other wildlife as hedges play host to insects, berries and other sources of food for wildlife.  Native mixed hedges also offer some winter protection for wildlife.
