GREEN BEECH

PLANTS AVAILABLE FROM NOVEMBER - APRIL

MINIMUM ORDER £50

Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica) makes an attractive formal garden hedge with minimal maintenance required. The leaves of Green Beech are vivid green in spring and summer turning to a copper brown in autumn.

If trimmed in late summer the Green Beech hedge plant will retain its leaves making an attractive bronze hedge for most of the winter, until the spring when the new bright green leaves appear again.

Although not generally known as 'evergreen' it is very popular as it retains it's leaves through the winter months and therefore acts as a dense screen, perfect for a boundary hedge.

The wildlife make full use of the dense growth of the Beech Hedge both in winter for shelter and roosting in bad weather, also for nesting birds in the spring.

Green Beech hedges prefer a well drained soil of sand or chalk and is not best suited to wet conditions where Hornbeam would fare better giving a similar effect.

Pruning of a Beech Hedge can be done once a year ideally in late summer once the growth has finished. Beech can withstand hard pruning and will generally regenerate. This is best undertaken in late winter prior to the spring growth.

Green Beech has an average to fast growth rate, normally adding 40-60cms per year in good conditions.

A Green Beech hedge should be planted at a rate of five plants per metre in a double staggered row. It can easily grow to a height of around 3m or more.

Green Beech is also a valuable addition to a Native Farm hedging mix.  Mixed native farm hedges are excellent for attracting birds and other wildlife as hedges play host to insects, berries and other sources or food for wildlife.  Native mixed hedges also offer winter protection for wildlife.
